Git

Also called: Version control, GitHub, Repo, Commit

A version control tool that records every change to your code, so you can go back to an earlier version anytime. It also makes working with others easier.

In detail

Git is like the save system in a video game. Each time you finish a stage, you "save" (commit) and write a one-line note. If things break, you load a save and go back to any commit. GitHub and GitLab are online repos that store these saves. Push to them and you have a cloud backup.

A few common words: a Repository (repo) is the project plus its full history. A Branch is a parallel line for experiments: you can change things freely on a branch and merge back into the main line when you're happy. .gitignore lists files that shouldn't be tracked, like node_modules and .env.

When coding with AI, Git is your most reliable undo button. Commit before every big change you ask the AI to make. If it breaks things, you can fully restore, which is safer than relying on the editor's undo.
