AI Autocomplete

Also called: Inline completions, Tab completion, Ghost text, Smart autocomplete

The editor suggests the next stretch of code in faint preview text as you type, and you accept it with Tab.

In detail

AI autocomplete is like a colleague sitting next to you: you type the first few lines, it guesses what comes next, and shows it as light "ghost text." Cursor Tab, GitHub Copilot, and similar editor plugins all fall in this category.

It is not the same as a conversational Agent. Completions are short, fast, and local. Agents read and write across files and run commands. Use completions for boilerplate, finishing a function, or completing an API call. For messy refactors or unclear requirements, switch to chat or an Agent.

Good habits: glance at a suggestion before accepting; if it keeps drifting, write a clearer function name and comment first, or describe the intent in chat.
